Fishing off the South coast

29/7/07

This was unexpected, last-minute and fortunate, which usually makes for a good time. I didn't know the doctor who owned the boat, nor his Korean teacher, Moon sensei, who invited the teachers from one of the schools he works at, but I do know them, so they passed on the open invitation. But that's not particularly interesting. What is more interesting is that we made our way to the harbour (towards Kansai airport) after work on Saturday and slept for a couple of hours on the boat (5 of us, there was plenty of room...) until the good doctor arrived at 5am. We prepped the boat and set sail at 6, heading South and then East, for about 3 hours altogether. Plenty of time for napping in the breeze and acquiring sea legs. I think that put us somewhere near Wakayama but I'll have to check. We could still see the coast in the distance, but were far enough out that the sea was nice and choppy and there weren't many other boats around. So more fish for us.

Not our boat, but one just like it

This is called a shiira in Japanese. In English... a big yellow fish.

Another shiira, into the icebox

The swells weren't huge, but big enough that I wouldn't want to be waving an extremely sharp knife around, but this guy knew what he was doing. I didn't ask if he was a surgeon.

Chinese-style sashimi, with shredded vegetables and crushed peanuts.

After the sashimi, the second shiira was fried up - best of both.
